Silent intimidation is a form of bullying that is neither verbal nor physical. As its name suggests, it manifests in subtle, discreet ways. It is primarily expressed through looks, but also through social rejection, invasive physical proximity, ostracism, intentional audible breathing, bodily stiffness, facial expressions, certain hand gestures, and other signals detailed in the I See You! guide.

“Silent intimidation often precedes other forms of bullying, which is why it’s important to address it.”

Because it is neither audible nor explicitly against social norms—unlike insults or physical aggression—this form of intimidation hides in a grey area that is hard to name, and therefore hard to report. As if, without a name, it simply didn’t exist.

Unfortunately, silent intimidation is often minimized or ignored—even by the victims themselves. In the absence of physical violence or explicit verbal abuse, it becomes difficult to recognize the behavior as bullying. Victims may feel ashamed or guilty, believing they are being too sensitive or misinterpreting others’ gestures or looks.

Yet silent intimidation is just as devastating as more visible forms. It can lead to anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, and in the most serious cases, even suicide.
